Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese discipline and can be translated as the “Supreme Ultimate Art.”  The interacting and balancing of opposites, Yin and Yang.

The slow graceful movements generate health, well-being and wisdom as well as a very high level martial art.

Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as Yin/Yang Fist and is recognized by “the Form” which uses interconnecting movements of Mind, Body and Spirit.

“Forms” (of which there are many), are the foundation of your training.  History shows that over the years Tai Chi Chuan has developed from combinations of fighting skills and Chi Kung Training.  Chi Kung is the skill of Cultivating Chi energy or Life Force and after a little practice you come to realize that Tai Chi Chuan is a very high level form of Chi Kung.  Chi Kung has a documented history of over 5000 years, where as Tai Chi Chuan and its “Forms” can be traced to the more recent Chen Family in the 16th Century.  The family secret treasure was shown to an outsider Yang Lu Chan, who developed his own softer style which has become popular world wide.

In 1956, the National Physical Culture and Sports Commission of the People's Republic of China developed a simplified and shortened version of the Tai Chi Chuan form.  It was based on the Yang family style of Tai Chi Chuan.

The new short form consists of 24 movements, and can be performed in 4 to 8 minutes, much more suitable to today’s modern lifestyle.  Whatever style you are attracted to, it should be one that you are keen to practice and possibly teach!

Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art as the name implies.  The therapeutic healing powers which reduce stress, promote balance, flexibility and ease body pain are popular reasons for practice.

Through learning “the form” you begin to discover yourself and learn how to use these skills in all areas of your life’s journey.

WORLD TAI CHI & QIGONG DAY - Tai Chi in the Park
In April 2005, we were pleased to become part of the World Tai Chi and Qigong Day organised by Bill & Angela Douglas from the USA and we celebrated with about 50 students in Nonsuch Park.  The park is quite local to us and the setting is ideal with lovely trees and Nonsuch mansion house as a backdrop

We did the same again in 2006 with nearly 100 students & friends and will do so each year from now on.  The atmosphere was wonderful and though the picture may not convey, the camaraderie and closeness of the group was an experience few will ever forget.  The Healing energy was very strong.

Again in 2007, a gloriously sunny day was unexpected but very welcome and we split into 4 seperate groups after the initial introduction and warm up, to practice & learn various forms of Qigong - 8 Brocade, 5 Elements, Shibashi and Chi-Do Chi Kung.  Then after a short break we practiced the 24 Forms together which was great to see and experience everyone flowing together and smiling faces throughout the lineups.  We were then very lucky to have some demonstrations from Lee Fairweather who showed his 'special 24 Form', Lee, Vicky & our instructors and advanced students showed the 32 Sword Form, Tony, Vicky & the Chi-Do students showed some Martial Applications and the Chi-Do animal form and our guest Peter Warwick showed Wild Goose Qigong Form.  We had many guests and fellow Tai Chi friends who brought their students and friends. We look forward to this being just as enjoyable next year and wish to invite any local clubs that would like to join our special worldwide day.

Once again, in 2008 we gathered nearly 200 people together to 'play' Tai Chi in the park.  It was a glorious day to be outside, at one with nature.  To look around and see the smiling faces, eyes alive with life, is a beauty to behold.  To watch the Commemmorative World Tai Chi Day DVD has been a real pleasure.  Contact us if you would like your own copy for £7.
